Secret Codes by Dr. Arash Mahyari, IHMC

November 12, 2022

The November Science Saturdays topic was “Secret Codes,” presented by Arash Mahyari. Students learned about the field of cryptography, and encrypted and decrypted secret messages using codes of increasing complexity. Third- and fourth-graders performed hands-on activities related to mirror writing, the substitution cypher, and the book cypher. Students in grades five and six learned about the Enigma code and built their own Enigma machines from Pringles potato chip cans. Volunteers from three Marion County high schools assisted.
