Fun With Polymers by David Fries, IHMC

November 4, 2017

The November Science Saturday topic was “Fun With Polymers”, presented by David Fries, Senior Research Scientist at IHMC in Pensacola. Students learned that polymers are everywhere. Hands-on experiments included making a hard polymer and a soft polymer. The soft polymer, oobleck (from "Bartholomew and the Oobleck” by Dr. Seuss), was especially was especially messy, fun, and hands-on. Students also performed physical activities related to the structure of polymers - including the most well known of the biopolymers, DNA. We appreciate the generosity of the sponsors and participation of high-school student volunteers from Forest, Vanguard, and Westport High Schools.
