Mitochondria and inflammation are at the confluence of maintaining cellular health by regulating energy production, metabolic signaling, and stress responses. Increasing evidence suggests that age-related mitochondrial dysfunction and associated inflammation contributes to the development of many chronic diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic disease, and cardiovascular conditions. Declines in mitochondrial bioenergetic capacity, impaired quality control, and increased oxidative stress can disrupt cellular homeostasis and accelerate biological aging.

This lecture will explore the role of mitochondrial dysfunction and the consequential inflammation as primary contributors of aging and disease, highlighting how changes in mitochondrial bioenergetics and inflammation influence cellular resilience, tissue function, and systemic health. We will discuss emerging insights into how mitochondrial pathways regulate longevity and how their disruption contributes to disease progression. Finally, the presentation will examine promising therapeutic opportunities aimed at restoring mitochondrial function and mitigating inflammation, improving bioenergetic capacity, and promoting healthy aging.
