Back pain changes over the course of a lifetime. So does robustness. Over the past 45 years Professor McGill has been probing the questions of how the spine works, and how it changes over time together with the features that define resilience. He has consulted with hundreds of elite athletes on performance enhancement and then their successful transition back to a healthy civilian life. Exercise and training stimulates adaptation. The key is to create the most appropriate adaptation for each stage of life. The lecture concludes with a plan to combine the best of resilience and performance into the senior years.
As a professor for 32 years, Stuart McGill explored back pain mechanisms, rehabilitation and performance training using his laboratory, the clinic, and the sports arena. He has been the author of hundreds of scientific journal papers and has mentored over 40 graduate students. As a consultant, he has provided expertise on low back pain and injury to challenging patients, various government agencies, many corporations and legal firms and professional/international athletes and teams worldwide. His several books include Back Mechanic to guide the reader through a self assessment of their pains and using that information, design a plan of what to do and not do.
