Mason Finnell

Mason joined IHMC in June 2025 as a Research Associate working as a software engineer with several research teams. He initially came to the Institute in September 2024 on an internship working with Dr. Matt Johnson and Connor Tate and their teams.
He was drawn to IHMC after taking a tour with his quadriplegic uncle and witnessing the potential that the Institute’s work can have in assisting those with disabilities, particularly in exoskeleton robotics and human performance research.
Mason has worked on the Warfighter and TAC-ASIST projects and is working with Dr. Brodie Mather on the INFEST project, which uses natural language processing in machine learning to generate topics, as well as perform stance and sentiment analysis on large sets of documents. He also is working with Sam Lensgraf and Tate to establish the marine robotics program at IHMC.
Mason graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. His academic interests include object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, statistical topics in electrical engineering, and applied machine learning. His research interests also include human performance through wearable technology and neuroimaging devices.
In his free time, Mason enjoys working out, golfing, and playing soccer. He also likes to travel and hang out with friends.
