Optical Illusions by Katherine Mortimore, IHMC

In Pensacola’s first Science Saturday of the new school year we learned about vision and optical illusions. The emphasis was on the neuroscience of how the eyes and the brain work together to see and understand things. Activities included experiencing different types of illusions and learning which parts of the brain cause each illusion. Third and fourth grade students created their own optical illusion based on a drawing of their hand - the illusion caused the drawing to appear 3-dimensional. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders created a more involved illusion based on a spinning CD.
