Morris is a research scientist focusing on combinatorial mathematics and mathematical statistics. Morris is the Trustees Professor and President Emeritus of the University of West Florida, having served as its President from 1988 to 2002. Previous positions include serving as the vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and professor of mathematics at the University of Mississippi, Chairman of Mathematics and then Interim Dean of Arts and Science at the University of Oklahoma. He began his academic career at Vanderbilt University. He holds a doctorate in mathematics from Tulane University.

Morris has served as a consultant for the National Security Agency and the Institute for Defense Analysis. He is a reviewer for "Mathematical Reviews" in the area of graph theory. He currently serves as advisor to the Jikei Group of technical schools in Japan.
